The Thunderdogs joined the WRWBL for the 2003 season under the guidance of co-founders/creators Kieran Farrell and Chris Duggan. The team was created at a Yankee game about 2 years earlier when Farrell and Duggan, former high school classmates, got together with a few other high school buddies. The idea of playing again was broached and the team was born. The "Thunderdogs" name came from a combination of the Trenton Thunder and the Portland Sea Dogs, farm teams for the Yankees and Red Sox---the favorite teams of Farrell and Duggan.
