Purchase, NY - In their first two games of the 2014 season, the New Rochelle Dirtbags swept the New York City Thunderdogs 7-0 and 6-0 in a doubleheader at Manhattanville College.
In the first game, starting pitcher John Bivas was masterful. John went the distance, throwing a complete game 1 hit shutout, walking only one. He retired the last 13 straight batters he faced.
Offensively, the Dirtbags were led by catcher Nick Cutsumpas and Jesus Jaile. Cutsumpas went 2-3 with 2 RBI's, a run scored, and a stolen base, while Jaile went 2-3 with 2 runs scored and a stolen base. Anthony Muccio, Brandon Docimo, Brett Poniros, and Jake Meyerson also recorded hits in the game. Poniros continued where he left off last year with his dazzling defensive play at short, making a diving play on a liner to his left robbing Dave Lopez of a base hit.
Right hander Rob Ambrosino started game 2 and was also very impressive in his 2014 debut. Rob threw 6 scoreless innings, striking out 5 Thunderdogs while walking 2 and scattered 4 hits. Submariner Ryan Fedak closed the game out with a 1-2-3 7th inning.
Jake McGrath paced the Dirtbag offense behind Ambrosino, going 3-4 with 2 runs scored, and an RBI. In left field, McGrath turned in a sparkling catch over his left shoulder robbing Matt Keenan of extra bases and was able to turn and throw to double up a runner at first. Right fielder Brandon Docimo went 2-4 with an RBI and Cutsumpas went 2-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Jaile finished 2-3 with an RBI. Kyle DiVico had an RBI single and scored a run. Louis Miceli, Ryan Orgielewicz, and Jeff Sosis also had hits in the contest. Overall the Dirtbags banged out 13 hits.
