New Rochelle, NY - The Westchester/Rockland Wood Bat League All Star Committee has selected seven players from the Dirtbags to play in the All Star Game this Sunday, August 17th, at Peekskill Stadium. The game is slated to begin at noon and will have catered food available for all players and fans in attendance. Chosen to play are SS Brett Poniros, OF Jake McGrath, LHP Andrew Zigmont, LHP Johnny Bivas, OF Kyle Divico, 3B Louis Miceli and CF Jake Meyerson. Miceli will also take part in the league's home run derby, which will start at 10:15 am.
Brett Poniros makes his first all star appearance in his second season with the 'Bags after hitting .326 with 30 hits while scoring 15 runs, third best on the team. The dynamic shortstop made countless acrobatic plays in the infield all summer, and was a third team All League selection.
Outfielder Jake McGrath earns his second straight All Star nod after hitting .333 and leading the team with 36 hits. The leadoff hitter also set a team high with 18 runs scored and 108 at bats. McGrath showed an advanced approach at the plate all season and was a major factor in the team making its first postseason appearance. McGrath was named a third team All League pick.
LHP Andrew Zigmont had a spectacular season as both a reliever and a starter. In 43.2 IP, the New Rochelle native posted a 1.92 ERA with 34 K's. Andrew was extremely reliable early in the year as a shut down reliever. As the team needed him to make crucial starts, he stepped up and started 6 games and ended the season 3-3 with a 1.17 WHIP.
LHP Johnny Bivas was the team's ace once again in 2014. In 57.2 IP, Bivas struck out 47 and had a 3.27 ERA. He put the team on his back multiple times, and finished the season with 3 complete games.
Outfielder Kyle Divico was a 3rd team All League and All Rookie Team selection in his first year with the Dirtbags. The Iona College student athlete hit .330 and led the team with 20 RBI's. Kyle filled in and was solid defensively in all three outfield positions. He also smacked 4 doubles and 2 triples while batting in the heart of the order all year for the 'Bags.
Third baseman Louis Miceli burst into the league as the Section 1 Player of the Year and didn't disappoint. The slugging Southern New Hampshire recruit led the team with a .340 average. Batting in the middle of the order, Miceli smacked 7 doubles and a triple while driving in 18 runs and scoring 16. For his efforts he was named a second team All League choice and All Rookie Team member. Miceli is a player the team looks to build around who has an extremely bright future ahead of him.
Centerfielder Jake Meyerson makes his first all star appearance for the 'Bags in 2014. The toolsy Rochester student athlete posted a .313 average with 21 hits, 4 doubles, and 8 stolen bases. Jake possesses incredible range in the outfield and a rifle throwing arm. Jake is another player the coaching staff is excited to see develop as he has loads of potential and had a fantastic 2014 season for the 'Bags.
