League announces new format changes

By WRWBL

At the WRWBL January winter meeting Tuesday night, the league managers voted to extend the regular season from the previous 34 to a 36 game schedule.  With 10 teams in the league, this will give the opportunity for each team to play the remaining 9 teams an even 4 times each rather than play an unbalanced schedule.

Also, a new proposal passed which will now rank teams based by total wins rather than winning percentage.  The idea behind this new system is that with weather issues/field availability, there is a possibility that not all teams will complete a full 36 game schedule.   The new system put into place will adjust the rankings of teams by total wins.  The first tiebreaker will be head to head match ups.  If still tied after the tiebreaker, then it will revert back to winning percentage.  The top 8 teams will quality for the playoffs in 2014, same as it was last year.  Rounds 1 and 2 continue to be a best out of 3 series, with the Final Series a best out of 5.  Last year's Bears/Outlaws finals was one of the most exciting in recent years, with the series lasting the full 5 games with the Bears being crowned champions for 2013.

Other notes from the Jan 28th meeting...New committees will be put in place for the major post season awards (Cy Young, MVP, Rookie of the Year, etc.)....The mandatory 10 man lineup was voted to be optional.  For example, if only 9 position players are present at the start of a contest and the remaining players are pitchers, the manager now has the option to bat 9 rather than 10... Season to tentatively begin the week of May 19th, with the All Star Game scheduled for Sunday, August 17th

The next manager's meeting is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, February 25th.
